Congratulations to April’s Performance Players of the Month, Lois Newberry and Tommy Cuomo!!
Here's how both players feel about winning the award and their future aspirations in the world of tennis!
Lois Newberry
How old are you and how long have you been playing tennis?
I turned 12 in January and have been playing tennis at BTC since I was 4 ¾.
What do you love about tennis?
I love everything! I love training, I love competing and I love meeting new players across the country.
How do you feel about being ‘Performance Player of the Month’?
I am very happy as I always try and give my best performance in training and matches.
Why do you think you won this month’s award?
I think I won the award because of my attitude and fight in my matches in Sutton and Nottingham. I was so pleased I won the 12U Grade 2 in Sutton and came Runner Up in the 12U Grade 2 in Nottingham, because it is only 5 months since I broke my hand in an accident!
What is your ultimate goal in the tennis?
To keep loving the sport I love, to become a professional player and win all the major tournaments would also be great!
Tommy Cuomo
How old are you and how long have you been playing tennis?
I turned 10 at the end of April. I’ve spent well over half my life playing tennis, as I started when I was about three and a half.
What do you love about tennis?
I love so many things about tennis, and the fact that it is different things depending on if it is squad training or a tournament or a team match. I like that there is usually a fun atmosphere. I love the chance to be creative with how I play and learn. And I like the fact that it is also a strategic sport where you really have to think on the strategy of the game and of my individual shots and not just hit hard all the time.
How do you feel about being ‘Performance Player of the Month’?
I’m really pleased about this and feel lucky as I know lots of hardworking and successful other players also have got it.
Why do you think you won this month’s award?
I believe that I got it partly for my good attitude, as I really try and focus and remain calm even when I’m struggling in training, or someone upsets me during a game. I used to find practice boring and I wrote to Kyle Edmund to ask him how he did so much training. He replied to me and set that he sets himself mini-goals in each training session to make each one feel important and make sure he stays focused.
What is your ultimate goal in the tennis?
I want to reach my full potential and have fun on that journey.
About the award:
The award for Performance Player of the Month has been introduced by our coaching team, to recognise players who go above and beyond on the tennis court and in the gym! The award is not designed to commend tournament results alone. Instead, each month the team will assess all performance players based on a 5-point criteria which considers; work ethic, leadership, professionalism, goal setting and dedication. There will be two winners every month throughout 2019, one from the 9U age group and another from the 10+.
